Or the dealer’s way of making me buy a master key with much more expensive? The problem is that in response they said that this key is only for emergencies and prolonged use will block the key, as this key can’t activate the central lock system and sometimes can’t startup the engine so errors will stack up in memory and therefore the key will be blocked by the system and the car was be serviced to clean this memory. When I bought my SLK it had only one master key.Īfter reading this thread I went to a MB dealership to get a secondary key (the valet key) so if anything happened with my master key I could use that one to open and start my car until I fixed the problem.įollowing a nice discussion about the existing or not of such key with three dealer’s workers they found its number part and call the main warehouse to see if was possible to order it. I’m hoping for cheaper options since I purchased the less than the dealers estimate. Towed the car back home and found out that only 8 keys can be programmed for my car and all has been used. Dealer estimated $2500 to replace the DAS. ‘Start error’ pops up in cluster when restarting the engine. Turn the ignition and started instantly and after 2 to 3 seconds, engine stalled. Turning the key to position 1 (accessory), then Position 2 (on), working fine. Key can lock/unlock except for the remote. Bought a R170 that was involved in accident (damaged on front driver side corner) couple of years ago and recently finished restoring for my wife, lost only key and purchased a new remote w/ key from dealer and I was told that should not have issue cuz mfg will program the key for the car ($190 for the key and had to tow my car to dealer, I was told it’s their policy). Hello, I’m a newbie and I’m in similar situation and hoping will get feedback since this thread is 14 yrs old. It can’t be changed.ĭisclaimer: I don’t know any of this for 100% certain, but it’s what I have pieced together from various bits of information If you buy a fob off eBay, it will have the RFID already programmed to another car. Since it cannot be reprogrammed, it is not possible to use one from a different car to start your car. It is programmed with a code, or number, than matches the DAS in your car – in effect, your VIN. It can be programmed using a special transmitter. The RFID can be programmed once and only once with a code to broadcast. If the DAS likes it, it tells the ECU to start the engine. The chip sends back a coded pulse which is now received by the ignition switch coil and relayed back to the DAS. The capacitor in turn powers the chip for a short time. This induces a current in the nearby RFID coil which charges the capacitor. When you turn your key to start your car, the Dive Authorization System (DAS) sends a high-frequency burst to the ignition switch coil. Surrounding the SLK ignition switch is a coil. In fact they can be made small enough to be imbedded under the skin of animals and even humans. These components are typically sealed in glass, cylindrical in shape, and quite small – like a grain of rice. Its main components are a coil, a capacitor, and a chip. The RFID is a small passive device, meaning it has no power supply of its own. Note that when you synchronize it is actually the receiver (the car) that is programmed to or learns the transmitter, not vice versa. Since the owner’s manual describes how to synchronize transmitters, it is reasonable to assume that the RF transmitter portion of a fob bought off eBay could be synchronized to your car (although I have never tried it). The receiver must know the next code(s) to expect from the transmitter. This technology requires that the transmitter and receiver be in synchronization. It works much like a garage door opener and uses a rolling code technology. The RF transmitter is powered by a battery and activated by the buttons on the remote to lock and unlock the doors and, if so equipped, arm and disarm the alarm. It can be removed and replaced from the fob, so it is possible to alter this portion of the fob to match another vehicle. The mechanical key is of course cut to match the mechanical lock on the ignition switch. The flat key consists of the combination of a mechanical key and an RFID imbedded in the plastic head. The USA SLK key fob consists of three separate components integrated into one package: a mechanical ignition key, a radio frequency (RF) transmitter, and a radio frequency identification (RFID) module. I assume you’re in the USA you didn’t say. There is no way to get a working key fob (key plus remote) off eBay or anywhere else other than your dealer. The cheapest way is to get a so-called flat key (no fob remote) made by your dealer.
